Yoshiaki Tanaka (16 at the time), a second year student of Kounodai High School in Ichikawa city, lost consciousness during a judo class and died shortly after. The parents of Yoshiaki filed a law suit against Chiba Prefecture seeking approximately 115million 390 thousand yen for lack of safety obligation by the school, which resulted in their son’s death. The first hearing was held on Aug. 4 in the Chiba District Court Matsudo Branch. The prefecture denied all allegations, stating that the student had died of sudden death with no causal relationship with the judo class.
The petition stated that Yoshiaki lost consciousness after he was pinned by newaza technique (ground technique) and died about one hour and 40 minutes later. The autopsy indicated that the cause of death was unknown.

On March 7 the decision was made in the lawsuit filed by the parents of Yoshiaki Tanaka (16 at the time), a second year student of Kounodai High School, who fell unconscious during a judo match in class and later died. They sought compensation of about 115 million 390 thousand yen against the prefecture for lack of due care by the school. The chief judge dismissed the charges, stating that the teacher did not neglect the obligation to supervise matches and that there was nothing inappropriate in his response to the incident.
Yoshiki lost consciousness after he was pinned by newaza technique (yokoshihou-gatame = the opponent’s shoulders and hips are pinned) used by a judo club member and died about 1 hour and 40 minutes later. The direct cause of death is unknown. Four matches were carried out simultaneously by dividing the training hall into four sections and all were supervised by just one male teacher.
