{"id":381,"date":"2016-04-08T23:34:40","date_gmt":"2016-04-08T14:34:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/judojiko.net\/eng\/?p=381"},"modified":"2016-04-08T23:34:40","modified_gmt":"2016-04-08T14:34:40","slug":"childrens-injuries-in-school-are-called-accidents-in-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/judojiko.net\/eng\/news\/381.html","title":{"rendered":"Children\u2019s injuries in school are called \u201caccidents\u201d in Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">Dr. Ryo Uchida, Associate Professor of Nagoya University, has written an article \u201cRisk of after-school clubs and the parents\u2019 unawareness of these risks: why do similar accidents occur in schools<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">?\u201d in Gendai Business (November 24, 2015).<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/gendai.ismedia.jp\/articles\/-\/46482\"><span style=\"color: #0563c1; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">http:\/\/gendai.ismedia.jp\/articles\/-\/46482<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">In the article he introduced a statement by the British Medical Journal in 2001, which described that accidents were events that happened randomly or by God\u2019s will, thus could not be avoided: however most damages or sudden events could be expected and were preventable. The British Medical Journal proposed that in such cases the word \u201caccident\u201d should not be used.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">In Japan, for decades, more than 4 children have died in judo every year. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">The Japan Judo Accident Victims Association assumed that fatal or serious accidents must be occurring overseas where judo is popular, and in 2010 asked the judo associations of a number of countries what their level of accidents were.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Century;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We used the word \u201caccident\u201d in the email, because this is the English word in the dictionary for the Japanese word <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>jiko. <\/em>The response from the United States and European countries used \u201cinjury\u201d to describe their background of such incidents.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">Why is \u201cinjury\u201d used when we are asking about accidents? We wondered in the beginning, but after a few exchanges it became clear that an \u201caccident\u201d was an unexpected event that was unavoidable, while an injury was an event that can be expected and prevented. In other words judo tragedies were considered as preventable in these areas.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">Most countries that responded to our questions replied that there have been no serious injuries and obviously no death, at least after 2000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">At the \u201cMeeting on Serious Injuries under School Supervision\u201d held recently at the Office Building of the Lower House, families of victims of serious sport injuries participated, including families of judo victims. In Japan 470 children have died in school sports injuries and 120 have become seriously handicapped over 11 years between 1998 and 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">Why have so many children lost their lives in sports in Japan?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">It was because sport accidents were considered as \u201cunfortunate events\u201d or \u201cnothing can be done about it\u201d, and in most cases the causes were not investigated. Therefore \u201cinjuries\u201d must be used, not \u201caccidents\u201d.
