{"id":436,"date":"2017-02-25T13:44:54","date_gmt":"2017-02-25T04:44:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/judojiko.net\/eng\/?p=436"},"modified":"2017-02-25T13:44:54","modified_gmt":"2017-02-25T04:44:54","slug":"for-judo-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/judojiko.net\/eng\/news\/436.html","title":{"rendered":"For Judo Safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Century;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Another child died, another suffered a<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> severe injury.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-family: Century;\">Judo injuries <\/span><\/strong><strong>\u2015<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Century;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In 2010 people in Japan were shocked to learn that \u201con average about 4 children die of judo injuries and about 10 suffer serious injuries every year.\u201d It was two years before martial arts became compulsory for both boys and girls in all public junior high schools. Over the 29 year period between 1983 and 2011, 118 students died as a result of judo injuries in Japanese junior high schools and high schools. (<em>Judo jiko<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, Ryo Uchida, Associate professor, Graduate School, Nagoya University)<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Century;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">During the three years between 2012 and 2014 there was no death of children under 18 in judo. However, in May 2015, a first year student in<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> junior high school in Fukuoka died of acute subdural hematoma developed during the after school judo club practice, in August 2015, a first year high school student died <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">heat stroke in a judo-related activity and in April 2016, a third year high school student in Sendai died <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">cervical spine fracture dislocation <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">acquired while <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">practicing judo. As many as 121 students have died as a result of judo injuries over the 33 years between 1983 and 2015.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bylines.news.yahoo.co.jp\/ryouchida\/20160516-00057737\/\"><span style=\"color: #0563c1; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">http:\/\/bylines.news.yahoo.co.jp\/ryouchida\/20160516-00057737\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n(Note: fatal injuries of children at judo clubs outside school, fatal injuries of adults and victims not recorded by Japan Sports Council are not included in the 121 deaths.)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Century;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Additionally, during the years without any death of children and outside those three years<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, many children have suffered severe injuries that left them permanently <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">disabled.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Century;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The number of fatal injury in judo was zero for 3 years not by chance. It was because the instructors considered safety of the children in judo activities in response to the warning sent <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">by the judo community, educators, medical experts and the media. <\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">Japan Judo Accident Victims Association<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\"> has also conducted awareness activities in different cities to ensure safety of children practicing judo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Century; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Century;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If there are 100 children participating in judo, there will be 100 different goals. A child may aim at being the judo champion<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> in the world or may want to enjoy judo for<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> their <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">lifetime. He\/she may wish to learn the principle of Jita-kyoei (mutual welfare and benefit) or acquire the art of self-defense. Regardless of their goals, we want the children to say \u201cI\u2019m glad I continued judo\u201d 10 years later, 20 years later or 50 years later when they look back on their judo experience in the future. We will work together with other people <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">interested<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> in children\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">welfare<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> to establish a society where adequate and appropriate attention is given to safety in judo instruction and practice.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>25\/02\/2017<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another child died, another suffered a severe injury.
