A study meeting of judo incidents in schools organized by Diet members

A study meeting of judo incidents in schools organized by Diet members Yasuhiro Nakane and Akihiro Hatsushika of the Democratic Party of Japan was held at the Second Members’ Office Building of the House of Representatives on December 16, 2011. Japan Judo Accident Victims Association was invited to speak at the meeting and eight members from six families have attended.
We were able to communicate the current status and issues of judo incidents as well as proposals for the elimination of the incidents to more than 15 Diet members attending the meeting as well as Diet members and secretaries who came to pick up the documents. Furthermore more than 30 members of the Ministry of Education and mass media participated in the meeting, highlighting the impact of the study group.

At the meeting four JJAVA families have reported the incidents suffered by their children, current status of judo incidents, mechanism of development of severe brain injury, proposals for judo injury elimination, development of JJAVA and the instructor training system of All Japan Judo Federation. Concerns about making martial arts compulsory was mentioned in reference to questionnaires and e-mails received by JJAVA.
“Analysis of Judo Injuries (flash report)” by Dr. Ryo Uchida, associate professor Nagoya University, was distributed to stress that head and cervical accidents which could lead to death or severe injury occurred more frequently in judo classes rather than judo club activities.

Diet member Nakane asked the Ministry of Education about the need to study the issues extensively including the postponement of compulsory introduction of martial arts in schools based on concerns about judo accidents in schools. It was decided that this study group should continue to meet.

The meeting was an important event for the elimination of judo incidents in the school environment.
