A male high school student of Sakushin Gakuin High School hit his head during judo club practice on Jan.17 and died of cerebral hemorrhage 3 days later. The judo club withdrew from the prefectural preliminary tournament of the 12th National High School Judo Championship Tournament held from Jan. 21 to 22.
The student is Shouichi Terashima (17), the son of Kouichi Terashima (44) and a second year student. Shoichi attended the practice of the judo club on Jan.17 at the dojo in the martial arts hall of the high school starting around 4:00 pm. He and his opponent, both shodan (1st dan), practiced tachi-waza (standing techniques) and ne-waza (ground work). About 6:30 pm when the opponent lost balance and threw Shoichi from a low position, using a shoulder throw, he was unable to break fall and fell on his head. Mr. Yasuhiro Miyazaki, the club teacher, stopped their practice to make him rest but about 10 minutes later he started to yawn, snore and looked pale. They took him to the hospital by car.
Mr. Miyazaki said they did not have an intense practice that day because about 50 members were adjusting for the prefectural preliminary tournament. “The injury should not have occurred. We have been checking to prevent injuries,” said the head teacher Mr. Hideo Suzuki. The judo club of Sakushin Gakkuin High School has been participating in the National High School Championship Tournament for 11 consecutive years and became No.3 in 1988. It was considered one of the strongest in the prefecture and the favorite in the preliminary tournament.
