A judo club member of Minobe High School in Yamanashi Prefecture, who had been selected to attend the Inter-High School Championship, died after judo practice.
The school said that Jun Saito (16), a second year student, who was practicing judo in the gymnasium of the school around noon on July 28, suddenly collapsed. He was taken to the closest hospital by ambulance but died around 4:30 that day. The cause of death was acute circulatory failure. It is assumed that he had heat stroke due to the excessively high temperature.
Medical checkups at school in the past had shown nothing unusual. On July 28 the high temperature in Yamanashi was 37.2℃, the second highest this summer.
