Third year high school student dies from judo injury during physical education

A third year student of Yanagigaura High School, Yuji Matsumoto (17), suddenly breathed hard and fell unconscious during a practice of ne-waza (groundwork) in physical education (PE) class in the judo hall of the school. He was taken to hospital and died about 2hours later. An autopsy will be conducted on May 13 to identify the cause of death.
According to the investigation by the Usa Police Station, the class, which was taught by Mr. Okazaki, the teacher of the school’s judo club, started at 10:45. Following warm-up, the students practiced ne-waza. After Yuji was held down for the second time he was unable to get up.
The school said that Yuji was well built and had no chronic symptoms. He was not a member of any sports club at school.
