Another victim 21/05/2015

In Ooita Prefecture, a student was again seriously injured in a judo accident. On May 21 a 15-year-old first grade high school student developed acute subdural hematoma in Randori practice, and was in a chronic vegetative state of unconsciousness.

A second year student implemented a technique on the victim during a sparring match, causing the victim to hit the back of his head hard on the tatami. It is suspected that the ambulance was not called immediately and the injured student was left lying for a while. The ambulance may have been called 30 minutes after the event.
The accident was hidden by the school for a month and a half. The school finally admitted to the incident when it was published exclusively by the Asahi Shinbun on July 2. It was reported to the All Japan Judo Federation on July 3.

The day after the Oita accident, a first grade junior high school student in Fukuoka was critically injured during practice at the school judo club. If the Oita incident had been reported immediately, the death of the girl in Fukuoka may have been prevented.

Students die in school accidents in Japan but independent investigation committees are usually not established for a long time. The causes remain ambiguous and similar accidents repeatedly occur during this time. To prevent them from happening we need immediate and clear investigation into why and how the accidents occur.
