The Ehime High School Athletic Federation announced on Aug. 1, 2008 that a male second year high school student (16) fell unconscious from heat stroke on July 27 during a judo summer camp organized by the High School Athletic Federation and is in a serious condition. According to the federation, the camp was held at National Ozu Youth Friendship Center on July 26 and 27, attended by 140 students, including designated athletes and other high school judo club members. After about 50 minutes of running and dashing practice from 6:00 am on July 27, the student complained that his legs didn’t move well. When a meeting was started in an open space, he sat on a bench to rest. One of the teachers saw him enter a building of the Center. At around 7:20 am, two students participating in the camp found him lying on the stairs leading to the bathroom on the underground floor of the Center. He is in a hospital in Matsuyama, but is still unconscious. The head of the Ehime High School Athletic Federation said, “The student was healthy on the 26th, so the morning training must have been the cause. It was necessary to make them drink more water and to reduce the training. We didn’t fully introduce necessary anti-heatstroke measures.”
